Supplement to Supplements
My method of judging if a supplement is good for me. Hope it helps you too.
With my favourite supplement, green drink.
Supplementing means that you take pills, powders, drinks etc full of nutrients. These are an addition to the nutrients you would get in your ordinary every day food but now in a concentrated form.
The upside of popping supplements is that you get a huge amount of the required nutrient conveniently in a pill! But as that is so easy, you may soon get into thinking that more is better and start to take them liberally without a good and visible reason. I will talk about those a bit later on in the blog.
However, this might not be the right thing to do: it is good to have a clear bodily (or psychological) symptom to take a particular supplement. Or it should be recommended by a professional after running some tests. A good place to start with is with your own doctor as they can run good tests nowadays with all the essentials covered. However, the tests have a very large range between the lowest and the highest acceptable level. If you fall in the extremes within that range can cause symptoms. One way to go around this is to ask for the print outs from test and see what they tell you, then you can make your own informed decisions.
From my own experience, the general good iron count starts from 7.5 and in my tests, I often get that figure or slightly higher and my doctor says that no supplement is necessary then. But with that low reading I get the tedious and familiar anemia symptoms. I tend to take a course of iron supplements without recommendation and then it is done for a while. Unfortunately, I tend to lose my iron and I still don’t know why. More research needed…
Apart from medical doctors, there are also other good natural professionals around, they have their own measuring systems and the knowhow if you hesitate to go to your doctor. I would highly recommend finding a good therapist who can help you with your health journey. If you want, I can help you find a good therapist in your area, just send me an email with your location and transport details. A good therapist can help you with a lot of health issues and at the end of it, save you a lot of money in missed purchases.
If you decide to start supplementing without expert advice, I would recommend that you to observe yourself carefully and see how everything makes you feel. That means that you should have in your body some clear indication why you would take a particular supplement, like I know that my iron count is low when I start feeling light headed and tired. Then take the appropriate supplement for up to a week and see if anything changes. You should notice something different within 3 days, maybe nothing drastic but something anyway. If you don’t notice anything within a week, then it didn’t work and you may be burdening your system unnecessarily.
Good indicators are:
1. What is your IMMEDIATE bodily reaction? This is all about you and your bodily reaction, it doesn’t matter what anybody else says, does or feels. Does the supplement look and smell good to you? Does it go down well or are you gagging when you need to swallow it? If there is no pleasure in this experience, maybe it is not for you, all these are your body’s way to say yes or no.
2. Nails and the area around them: if your nails are growing well, not brittle or breaking, if your cuticles are not breaking or torn and no hang nails are present, then you are on the right tracks.
3. Energy levels, do you find yourself doing more or less of what you intended? Do you need less time resting? Do you sleep better?
4. Third one is your mood, are you being happy and positive or down and negative? I will not touch the dreaded topic of depression here any further but apart from the psychological reasons, there can also be bodily depression and feelings of anxiety, which may or may not be remedied by some intense supplement therapy.
