Thoughts on Supplements

Vitamins, minerals, preparations

Supplements: food supplements, meaning pills, creams, sprays, powders, drinks full of nutrients that you otherwise can get out of your ordinary every day food but now in a concentrated form.

You should get it all from your food but do you? I am afraid that there are no hard and cut rules should you or shouldn’t you take any, only your own opinion and observations but below I will give you mine, based on a lot of study and research and personal experimentation. I really hope it will bring some kind of clarification to you and I do not sell any supplements!

This topic can get you into deep waters as it is a big industry: supplements is a billion Euro business yearly and depending on what you read, opinions change greatly. Sometimes it looks like there is no way you can survive till tomorrow if you don’t take any: everybody has something in their cupboard. And yet, some people are totally against taking them and that the only thing you achieve with them is very expensive toilet trips.

There is a lot of medical proof that a lack of minerals and vitamins can lead to severe malnutrition and disease, like scurvy in sailors and pellagra in areas where corn is the main stable of the diet. Taking the appropriate vitamin will cure these diseases easily, so that means that they are good and everyone should take them, just in case, right? Is supplementation then the general way to go or should you just be happy with your food even if you suspect that it is not enough? Good questions.

There may be specific moments when you feel that you should take vitamins to supplement the nutritional value of your food, you may feel tired, headachy, have a cold etc.

Some years ago, before my Candida cure, I read how good cayenne pepper is for you, full of nutrients like vitamin C and it can help you lose weight in various ways, lower blood pressure, may aid digestion and help relieve pain, may improve psoriasis and reduce cancer risk. Now, who wouldn’t want that? Off I went and started taking this glorious herb and expected all those good things to happen to me. After a week I hadn’t noticed any great health improvement but the amount of arguments I had had with just about anybody who was in my close vicinity was quite obvious! My already short temper got even shorter with this hot spice and I decided to be merciful to the lovely people around me, stopped taking it and gave it to a friend who is known for her sweet and patient nature. She did well with it and I had to acknowledge that maybe this wasn’t the right supplement for me… but I have found out that there are others that are more suitable to my body and temperament.

One of the facts in this consideration is that at the modern day due to industrialized farming in some parts of the world the soil may have lost a lot of its nutrients and therefore can’t give it to the produce. Another factor in this side of the argument is that sometimes some people just do not absorb a particular nutrient from their food, however abundantly present it is: this has been the case with me and iron ever since I was a child, I have very often supplemented with iron during my whole life.

The opposing fact is that if you start taking supplements, your body may start to think great, this is easy! gets lazy and will not bother with the complicated process of extracting the needed nutrients from your food. You feel very good as long as you take the supplement but once you run out, you will drop further: after taking supplements your body may need to readjust. Then it is good to load your diet with food rich in that particular nutrition for a while, making sure that your body gets the help it needs.

Your trip to the world of supplements might start with a doctor or another health professional who can measure your lack of nutrients. You can also supplement yourself if you know your symptoms, and if you start, you should see some kind of difference within 3-4 days. Maybe not any disappearance of your symptoms, but some improvement. If you decide to take supplements might be a good idea to give your body a break every now and then so that the absorption mechanism would stay alert.

My experience is that after I dealt with my Candida and digestion my need for supplementation has reduced tremendously!
